Main responsibilities
- Plan and sequence the subject curriculum, meeting the national curriculum where it applies.
- Support colleagues' subject knowledge and teaching.
- Lead assessment and moderation in the subject.
- Monitor pupils' progress and the quality of teaching, and act on findings.
- Manage the subject's resources and budget.
- Lead the subject's preparation for statutory tests or public exams.
Statutory duties and official sources

- Phonics and early reading leads should follow DfE's reading framework; the phonics screening check is statutory in year 1. Source: DfE, The reading framework; Primary assessments: future dates.

Curriculum review. Following the Curriculum and Assessment Review final report and the government response (November 2025), DfE says future assessment arrangements are under review; arrangements for 2026 to 2027 are unchanged (Primary assessments: future dates). Check for a revised national curriculum before relying on current programmes of study beyond 2026 to 2027.
Key dates in the school year (2026 to 2027, England)
- 10–13 May 2027: key stage 2 tests (English grammar, punctuation and spelling; reading; mathematics).
- From 7 June 2027: multiplication tables check (2 weeks); from 14 June 2027: phonics screening check (1 week).
- 21 February 2027: GCSE and A level entries; 10 May–23 June 2027: exam period; 15 May 2027: GCE centre-assessed marks deadline (JCQ key dates).
Common challenges and good practice
- Primary subject leaders with little time. Prioritise curriculum sequencing and staff subject knowledge over monitoring paperwork.
- Evidence for inspection. Ofsted's toolkit evaluates curriculum and teaching as a whole; avoid creating evidence only for inspection.
