Questions by theme
With the evidence a strong answer should demonstrate.
Strategic leadership
1 panel question
Question 1Practised
How would you support the headteacher to deliver the school improvement plan while leading your own areas of responsibility?
What a strong answer shows
A clear grasp of the deputy's dual role — leading across the school and holding a distinct portfolio — with concrete examples of impact.
Safeguarding
2 panel questions
Question 2Practised
Describe how you would strengthen a reporting culture where staff feel confident to raise low-level concerns.
What a strong answer shows
A practical reporting route, prompt recording and escalation under the staff-concerns procedure. The low-level concerns policy decides whether concerns go first to the DSL or the headteacher; either way the headteacher should be the ultimate decision-maker (KCSIE 2026, paragraph 516). Ask how the candidate would check that temporary and support staff know what to do.
Question 3Practised
A pupil raises a safeguarding concern about a member of staff. What would you do, and how would your reporting route change if the concern involved the headteacher?
What a strong answer shows
Immediate attention to the child’s safety, a factual record and the correct staff-allegation route under current KCSIE and local procedures. The candidate should distinguish the headteacher route from the chair or proprietor route (KCSIE 2026, paragraphs 78 and 440) and avoid investigating the allegation themselves.
Line management
1 panel question
Question 4Practised
Tell us about a time you managed the underperformance of an experienced colleague. What did you do and what changed?
What a strong answer shows
Honest, supportive challenge; use of evidence; and a resolution that improved outcomes without avoiding difficulty. Ask what the candidate tried before formal procedures and what they would do differently.
School improvement
1 panel question
Question 5Practised
How do you use data to identify where the school should focus next, without narrowing the curriculum?
What a strong answer shows
Triangulation of data with work scrutiny and lesson visits, and a curriculum-first mindset.
Behaviour & culture
1 panel question
Question 6Practised
What does a consistent, inclusive behaviour culture look like, and how would you build it across a staff team?
What a strong answer shows
Systems that support staff, high expectations held with warmth, and attention to disadvantaged and SEND pupils.
Vision & values
1 panel question
Question 7Practised
What kind of deputy headteacher do you want to be, and how would colleagues describe your leadership?
What a strong answer shows
Self-awareness, values-led leadership, and alignment with the school's direction rather than personal ambition alone.
Curriculum
1 panel question
Question 8Practised
How do you assure the quality and coherence of the curriculum across subjects you don't personally teach?
What a strong answer shows
Examples of curriculum sequencing, pupil work and discussion with subject leaders. Ask what the evidence changed, rather than accepting inspection terminology as evidence of quality.
Managing change
1 panel question
Question 9Practised
Tell us about a whole-school change you led. How did you take reluctant staff with you?
What a strong answer shows
A clear rationale, staged implementation, listening, and persistence through the dip.
Staff wellbeing
1 panel question
Question 10Practised
How do you protect staff workload while still raising standards?
What a strong answer shows
Practical workload reduction, clarity on what matters, and treating wellbeing as a lever not a luxury.
Data & outcomes
1 panel question
Question 11Practised
A key group — say disadvantaged boys — is underperforming. Walk us through your response.
What a strong answer shows
Diagnosis before action, targeted support, and evaluation of impact rather than a scattergun of interventions.
Acting headship
1 panel question
Question 12Practised
The headteacher is unexpectedly off for six weeks from tomorrow. What do you need agreed before you walk in, and what would you not decide alone?
What a strong answer shows
A deputy must take on the headteacher's duties to the extent the headteacher or relevant body requires (STPCD 2025, paragraph 48.2). Strong answers agree that scope with the chair, settle who is case manager for allegations about staff, check DSL cover, and keep governors informed. Ask what the candidate would deliberately leave for the headteacher's return.
Inspection
1 panel question
Question 13Practised
Inspectors want to discuss an area in your portfolio. What would they see on an ordinary day, and what would you not prepare?
What a strong answer shows
Knowledge that inspectors gather first-hand evidence mainly through professional conversations and observing the school's daily work, often alongside leaders, and that they do not need documents produced specifically for inspection (school inspection toolkit, June 2026). The candidate should name the evaluation area and say honestly where it does not yet meet the expected standard, and why.
Working with the head
1 panel question
Question 14Practised
How would you offer honest challenge to your headteacher while remaining loyal and supportive?
What a strong answer shows
A specific example of respectful challenge, the evidence used and how disagreement was resolved. Loyalty must not prevent raising safeguarding or other serious concerns through the proper route.

What should a deputy headteacher interview cover?
Panels usually probe strategic contribution, line management, safeguarding, school improvement, and how the candidate supports the headteacher while leading across the school.
Are there tasks as well as questions?
Many deputy appointments include a data task, safeguarding scenario, or presentation. Use the editorial guides for question ideas and the shop template to score responses consistently.
How should a panel use these questions fairly?
Choose questions relevant to the published role and agree what evidence you will assess before interviewing. Use a consistent core set, make appropriate adjustments, and record evidence rather than rewarding a rehearsed style. These prompts support your recruitment process; they do not replace required checks.
