Reading Subject Leader Conversation Pack (2026/27)

Detailed overview

The Reading Subject Leader Conversation Pack (2026/27) is for a 20-minute conversation between a headteacher and their reading leader about whether the pupils who need most help can read the books in front of them. 2026/27 edition, checked against Ofsted's school inspection materials for inspections from 7 September 2026.

Reading is the one subject where Ofsted's operating guide sets out what inspectors must do in primary and early years, including listening to some lower-attaining pupils read an unfamiliar book and visiting phonics lessons and story time. This pack turns that into a practical conversation using what you already have.

What's inside

  • What the operating guide says inspectors do for reading
  • Six conversation prompts, each with what the leader might point to
  • Inclusion in reading: questions on pupils with SEND, disadvantaged pupils and pupils who join later or miss school
  • An optional "pupils you can talk about" sheet (a HeadteacherChat exercise, not an Ofsted requirement)
  • A 20-minute conversation plan and three things to do before half-term

Use it alongside our Early Reading and Phonics Leader Questions for a fuller self-review. Editable Word document, 5 pages, landscape. Not produced or endorsed by Ofsted.
