SENCO interview questions

20 questions: 12 with answer guidance across 10 themes, plus 8 further questions. Maintained by the HeadteacherChat editorial team; reviewed .

Print the guide for a mock panel: answer guidance and space for notes are included.

Questions by theme

With the evidence a strong answer should demonstrate.

Statutory duties

3 panel questions

  1. Question 1Practised

How would you assure the school is meeting its duties under the SEND Code of Practice and the graduated approach?

    What a strong answer shows

An example of assess, plan, do and review with the pupil, family and teachers; clear responsibilities, an agreed review date and evidence that support changed when it was not effective.

  2. Question 2Practised

The board must decide your role in leadership and management and monitor how effective you are. What would you want that agreement to say?

    What a strong answer shows

The candidate should know SEND Regulations 2014, regulation 50: protected time and administrative support (code 6.91), access to the leadership team, which regulation 50(3) functions they hold and which sit with others, and how effectiveness will be judged. A candidate new to the role should also know they must hold the mandatory qualification, for new starters the NPQ for SENCOs, within three years of becoming a SENCO (regulation 49(4) and (7)).

  3. Question 3Practised

How do you make sure the school meets its duties under the Equality Act, including reasonable adjustments?

    What a strong answer shows

Examples of identifying barriers and arranging reasonable adjustments across lessons, trips and wider school life. Ask how the candidate would check that agreed adjustments happen in practice.

Provision mapping

1 panel question

  1. Question 4Practised

Walk us through how you'd map and evaluate the impact of SEND provision across the school.

    What a strong answer shows

Outcome-focused provision mapping tied to spending decisions, not just a list of interventions. Ask the candidate to cost one intervention aloud (staff hours, training, materials) and name the outcome measure that would decide whether it continues.

Inclusion leadership

1 panel question

  1. Question 5Practised

How would you help teachers adapt classroom teaching while ensuring pupils receive any additional provision they need?

    What a strong answer shows

Specific classroom adaptations, staff coaching and checks on participation and learning. Better classroom teaching should not be used as a reason to withhold necessary specialist provision.

Parent partnership

1 panel question

  1. Question 6Practised

Describe how you'd rebuild a parent's trust after a breakdown over their child's support.

    What a strong answer shows

Empathy, transparency, co-production of the plan, and reliable follow-through.

EHCP process

1 panel question

  1. Question 7Practised

Walk us through how you manage an application for an EHC needs assessment and the annual review cycle.

    What a strong answer shows

A clear account of the school and local authority’s respective responsibilities, evidence gathering, pupil and family involvement, and how statutory deadlines are tracked and escalated, including the phase-transfer review deadlines (SEND code, chapter 9).

Multi-agency working

1 panel question

  1. Question 8Practised

How do you coordinate support across health, social care, and education for a child with complex needs?

    What a strong answer shows

Effective partnership working, clear communication, and keeping the child at the centre.

Data & impact

1 panel question

  1. Question 9Practised

How do you evaluate whether SEND interventions are actually improving outcomes and value for money?

    What a strong answer shows

Baseline and progress data, professional judgement, and willingness to stop what isn't working.

Staff development

1 panel question

  1. Question 10Practised

How would you build staff confidence and expertise in adaptive teaching for SEND?

    What a strong answer shows

A CPD strategy, coaching, and modelling — not reliance on a few specialist adults.

Safeguarding

1 panel question

  1. Question 11Practised

Children with SEND can be more vulnerable. How does that shape your safeguarding practice?

    What a strong answer shows

Awareness of heightened risk, accessible ways for pupils to communicate, and vigilance. KCSIE 2026 expects the DSL to liaise with the SENCO and to recognise the additional risks children with SEND face online, from bullying, grooming and radicalisation (Annex B). Ask how the candidate and the DSL would share information about a pupil who communicates distress through behaviour.

Inspection

1 panel question

  1. Question 12Practised

Inspectors arrive next week. What would they look for in SEND, and what would you show them that already exists?

    What a strong answer shows

The toolkit's inclusion area: identifying needs early and accurately, the graduated approach, specialist advice acted on, a SEN information report that accurately describes provision, the local offer, transitions and expectations that are not lowered for pupils with SEND. Strong candidates point to existing records rather than new documents; the school inspection toolkit (June 2026) says inspectors do not need documents produced specifically for inspection.

Further interview questions

8 common panel questions, without answer guidance.

  1. Question 13Practised

How do you work with teachers and support staff to ensure that pupils with SEND are effectively included and supported in the classroom?

  2. Question 14Practised

Can you give an example of how you have worked collaboratively with an external agency—such as a speech and language therapist, CAMHS, or occupational therapist—to support a pupil’s needs?

  3. Question 15Practised

How do you ensure that whole-school policies, procedures, and culture are inclusive and reflect best practice for supporting pupils with SEND?

  4. Question 16Practised

Take us through an assess, plan, do and review cycle. How did pupil and family views, teaching evidence and outcomes change the provision?

  5. Question 17Practised

How do you support pupils with SEND as they transition between key stages—for example, from Year 6 to Year 7, or from school to further education or employment?

  6. Question 18Practised

Describe a challenging situation you have encountered related to SEND provision. How did you approach it, and what was the outcome?

  7. Question 19Practised

What recent training or professional learning have you undertaken related to SEND?

  8. Question 20Practised

How do you stay up to date with national developments, statutory guidance, and evidence-based strategies in SEND?

SENCO interview FAQs

Sources and scope

These questions support preparation and panel discussion. For appointments in England, use the current guidance and your school or trust’s recruitment policy.

Keeping children safe in education

Mandatory SENCO qualification guidance

SEND Regulations 2014, regulations 49–50

School inspection toolkit, version 2.0, June 2026

What SENCO interview topics come up most?

Expect questions on provision mapping, statutory compliance, multi-agency working, parent partnership, and how SEND is led across the school.

Which SENCO qualification should applicants check?

Check the current DfE requirements and the person specification. The SENCO NPQ replaced NASENCO as the mandatory qualification from September 2024, with transitional provisions and exemptions for some existing SENCOs.

How should a panel use these questions fairly?

Choose questions relevant to the published role and agree what evidence you will assess before interviewing. Use a consistent core set, make appropriate adjustments, and record evidence rather than rewarding a rehearsed style. These prompts support your recruitment process; they do not replace required checks.

Guides for SENCO

  • SEND

The SEND code of practice and the law behind it still apply in England. The reforms the government set out in February 2026 are proposals: it does not expect new legislation to take effect until September 2029, and it has not yet published its response to the consultation.

  • SEN provision maps

Provision maps and provision mapping: what to record for SEN support, how to connect assessment and review, and what to publish in the SEN information report.

  • Equality duty

What the public sector equality duty (PSED) means for schools in England, which schools must publish equality information and objectives, and the duties towards disabled pupils.

  • Alternative provision

Who must arrange alternative provision, what to check before commissioning a placement, and how to oversee pupils' education, attendance and reintegration into school.
