Questions by theme

With the evidence a strong answer should demonstrate.

Financial leadership

1 panel question

  1. Question 1Practised

With a real-terms squeeze on budgets, how would you protect teaching and learning while setting a balanced budget?

    What a strong answer shows

A worked example of forecasting, staffing assumptions and options for governors or trustees. Ask how the candidate would protect provision, manage cash and explain uncertainty. In a trust, the candidate should know the budget forecast return needs board approval and that an uncovered deficit budget must be reported to DfE within 14 days (Academy trust handbook 2026, paragraphs 2.15–2.17); in a maintained school, the SFVS and the local authority's scheme for financing schools apply.

Operations

1 panel question

  1. Question 2Practised

How do you make sure operational systems — premises, catering, IT — support instructional time rather than distract from it?

    What a strong answer shows

A service mindset, sound risk management, and judging operations by their impact on pupils and staff.

HR & compliance

1 panel question

  1. Question 3Practised

How would you organise safer recruitment so required checks are completed, exceptions are escalated and appointments progress efficiently?

    What a strong answer shows

Clear responsibilities, documented checks against current guidance and a process for resolving gaps. Speed must not replace required safeguarding checks. The candidate should know the single central record covers all staff, including agency and supply staff who work for one day (KCSIE 2026, paragraph 348), that offers are conditional until pre-appointment checks are complete (paragraph 313) and that some volunteers have been in regulated activity since 1 September 2026 (paragraph 383).

Working with the head

1 panel question

  1. Question 4Practised

Describe the working relationship you'd want with the headteacher and governing body.

    What a strong answer shows

Candid partnership, clear reporting to governors, and confidence to offer professional challenge.

Estates & health and safety

1 panel question

  1. Question 5Practised

How would you assure the governing body that the school is safe and compliant across premises and health & safety?

    What a strong answer shows

A risk-based approach, clear records, and a plan for statutory testing and remediation.

Procurement & value

1 panel question

  1. Question 6Practised

Give an example of how you secured better value from a contract or supplier.

    What a strong answer shows

A specific contract example covering total cost, service quality, procurement requirements, conflicts of interest and implementation. Ask what saving or service improvement was actually achieved.

Income generation

1 panel question

  1. Question 7Practised

What opportunities would you explore to grow or diversify the school's income?

    What a strong answer shows

Realistic ideas — lettings, grants, trust-wide efficiencies — with an eye on risk and staff time.

Safeguarding

1 panel question

  1. Question 8Practised

As a member of SLT, what is your role in the school's safeguarding culture?

    What a strong answer shows

Ownership beyond finance — safer recruitment, site safety, and modelling vigilance.

Leading support staff

1 panel question

  1. Question 9Practised

How do you get the best from an office, site, and catering team with very different roles?

    What a strong answer shows

Clear expectations, development, and valuing support staff as central to the school.

Data protection

1 panel question

  1. Question 10Practised

A supplier asks for pupil or staff information to deliver a service. How would you decide what can be shared and involve the right people?

    What a strong answer shows

A clear purpose, the minimum necessary data, secure transfer and consultation with the school’s data-protection lead where needed. Ask how the decision would be recorded and explained to staff.

School Business Manager interview FAQs

Sources and scope

These questions support preparation and panel discussion. For appointments in England, use the current guidance and your school or trust’s recruitment policy.

Keeping children safe in education 2026, Part three (safer recruitment)

Academy trust handbook 2026, effective from 1 October 2026

What makes a strong SBM interview?

Panels usually test finance grip, HR and estates awareness, relationship with the headteacher, and how the candidate protects instructional time through efficient operations.

How should a panel use these questions fairly?

Choose questions relevant to the published role and agree what evidence you will assess before interviewing. Use a consistent core set, make appropriate adjustments, and record evidence rather than rewarding a rehearsed style. These prompts support your recruitment process; they do not replace required checks.
