SENCO
The SENCO coordinates provision for pupils with special educational needs in mainstream schools in England, under the SEND code of practice: 0 to 25 years (2015) and its graduated approach of assess, plan, do, review. A newly appointed SENCO must gain the national professional qualification (NPQ) for SENCOs within three years of taking up the post; the NPQ became the mandatory qualification on 1 September 2024. This topic covers provision planning, EHC needs assessments, working with families and the SENCO’s place in the leadership team.
