Katie Pagnotta's practical guide gives teachers strategies and real-world examples for running their classrooms.

Her Brain- and Body-Aligned Responsive Systems (BBARS) framework moves the focus from punishment to understanding the root causes of pupils' behaviour, leading to targeted interventions that build resilience.

Katie explains complex ideas in accessible language, with clear explanations, tips and tools teachers can use in class.

The book looks at the whole child – emotionally, socially and physically – and helps teachers make classrooms that are both academically rigorous and emotionally supportive.

A good read for anyone wanting a more compassionate and effective approach to behaviour.

What BBARS is

BBARS stands for Brain- and Body-Aligned Responsive Systems of Excellence. The publisher says the framework brings four strands into one approach:

  • social and emotional learning
  • trauma-responsive care
  • mental health literacy
  • equity

The publisher also says the book draws on interviews with 18 professionals from education, psychology and neuroscience, and calls it "an educator survival guide". These are the publisher's descriptions; HeadteacherChat has not tested the framework in a school.

Who it is for

Class teachers, pastoral staff and mental health leads who want a relational, needs-led lens on behaviour. The author writes as a school counsellor and the terminology is not tied to England's system, so leaders should read it alongside the DfE's Behaviour in schools and Mental health and behaviour in schools guidance rather than as a replacement for the school's behaviour policy.
