Dear Bridget Phillipson MP,
Congratulations on your new role and thank you for your message shared on social media offering your support. It was very much appreciated.
As the co-founders of HeadteacherChat.com, a thriving online community of over 60,000 school leaders and educators,we believe in the power of collective voices. Our platform provides a space for educators to connect, share ideas, and advocate for the future of education. I write to you today with 30 years of experience in the education sector, having transitioned from a Deputy CEO role in a multi-academy trust to co-founding HeadteacherChat, and I'm eager to share the key priorities our community has identified.
Our recent survey tells us that our school leaders are filled with passion, dedication, and a deep desire for positive change. While acknowledging the challenges facing education today, the survey also highlighted a sense of hope and optimism for the future.
Teachers and school leaders alike are eager to work with you, as Education Secretary, to create a more equitable, supportive, and inspiring educational landscape for all.
We asked leaders what they would put as a key priority to improve on. Their responses were:
Empowering Schools through Funding: We envision a future where schools have the resources they need to thrive. This includes increased funding for primary schools, SEND provision, and support staff, ensuring that every child has access to a high-quality education.
Transforming Ofsted into a Force for Good: Rather than fearing inspections, we envision a supportive and collaborative process that empowers schools to identify their strengths and areas for growth. This shift would reduce stress and workload, allowing teachers to focus on what they do best: inspiring and educating students.
Championing SEND Students: We are passionate about creating a truly inclusive education system where all children, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, can reach their full potential. This requires increased funding, better access to specialists, and a more holistic approach to supporting SEND students throughout their educational journey.
Nurturing and Retaining Talented Teachers: Recognising the invaluable role teachers play in shaping young minds, we are calling for greater support and recognition for the profession. This includes addressing workload concerns, improving public perception of teachers, and creating a more positive and fulfilling work environment.
Preparing Students for the Future: We envision a curriculum that equips students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the 21st century. This means embracing technical innovation, encouraging critical thinking, and fostering a lifelong love of learning.
As one of our community said, "The message you have already given us so far about re-setting relationships and restoring the public's view of education is music to my ears. I went into education to make a difference...You have shown us that you value what we do and will help us to make a difference for every child. Thank you"
By working together, we believe we can forge a brighter future for all learners and create an education system that truly serves the needs of every child.
Yours sincerely, Jonathan Coy CoFounder, HeadteacherChat
