One of the greatest strengths of the HeadteacherChat community is the way we support each other.
School leadership is rewarding, fun, exhausting, and demanding, but having someone to talk to and share experiences with makes all the difference.
This was evident over the weekend when a member of our community asked:
"What is the best piece of advice you can give someone who has an interview for a headship on Monday?"
As always, our community stepped in to help, so we have compiled some of the best advice to support anyone preparing for a leadership interview.
1. Just Be Yourself
Being yourself releases pressure, allowing you to engage more naturally and confidently.
- Think of the interview as a conversation rather than a test.
- The interviewers want you to succeed, so let your authenticity shine.
- This is not just about getting a job but finding a school where you can be happy and thrive.
2. Know the School and the Job
Before applying, take the time to visit the school, talk to staff and students, and read key information.
- Ask yourself:
- Is this the right job for me?
- Will I feel fulfilled and engaged here?
- Does the school align with my leadership values?
Useful Resource:
3. Think Positively
Confidence matters. Those who believe in their abilities are more likely to succeed.
- Focus on what you love about leadership rather than what you think you cannot do.
- Challenge self-limiting beliefs and remind yourself why you are ready for this role.
4. Be Proud of Your Achievements
Reflect on your accomplishments over the past year.
- Write them down and ask yourself:
- How did I achieve this?
- What was the positive impact?
- What would have happened if I had not intervened?
- Take a moment to celebrate your success and recognise your growth as a leader.
Useful Resource:
5. Focus on Strengthening the Team
Leadership is about building strong relationships and nurturing your team.
- Ask yourself:
- How will I get to know my colleagues?
- What will be my approach to staff development?
- How will I celebrate strengths and offer support where needed?
Useful Resource:
6. Get Plenty of Rest
Sleep is essential for managing stress and performing well.
- Go to bed early the night before.
- A clear mind makes a stronger impression.
7. Ask Questions
Some candidates fear that asking questions makes them seem unsure. This is not the case.
- You have a right to know more about the role and the school.
- Your questions might help strengthen your answers or reveal potential challenges.
Useful Resource:
8. Enjoy the Day
Take pride in reaching this stage. Many people never take this step.
- Stay calm, smile, and enjoy the process.
- Whether you secure the role or not, this experience will make you stronger.
